Margaret Keitha Findlay (1916-2007) was the first registered architect in Tasmania. Her practice focused on domestic architecture with particular concern given to functionality for women, and how spaces can positively impact a woman’s day-to-day life. Findlay was also the first woman to qualify as an associate of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) and in 1944 she became the first female architect employed by the Public Works Department in Tasmania.
After completing school, Findlay was articled to a Hobart-based architect for a year. Following this in the 1940s, she became a draughtswoman at the Australian Newsprint Mills Pty Ltd where she later undertook full architectural responsibility of the company. A residential suburb for ANM workers' families was constructed at New Norfolk with Findlay solely designing more than 60 houses for the development.
In 1945, she was appointed Instructor in Architectural Draughtsmanship at the University of Sydney, becoming the only female academic at the school. She worked there until retiring in 1970.
In 2011 Findlay was added to the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women for her extraordinary contribution to architecture and epochal career.
