Maria Gigney (1968-) is a registered architect in Tasmania. Gigney successfully ran her own practice for 16 years (1999-2015) and was the first women to establish an architecture practice since Edith Emery. As a sole-practitioner, Gigney received a number of awards for her bespoke residential projects including the National Award for Small Project Architecture at the AIA’s National Architecture Awards in 2010.
Gigney studied at the University of Tasmania, graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Architecture. She worked for Philp Lighton Architects (Launceston) before becoming an associate at Eastman Heffernan Walsh and Button / HBV (Hobart) in 1995. Gigney then went on to start up MGArchitects where she worked on an extensive range of projects. In 2016, her practice expanded to MGA.i where she was joined by Kate Symons and Rosa Douramanis. The pair then set up Studio Ilk in 2020 where Gigney works as Senior Consultant Architect. Her primary focus at the studio is residential and commercial work.
In her role at Studio Ilk, Gigney continues to make meaningful and unique contributions to the Tasmanian architectural landscape. With over 30 years’ experience, Gigney not only offers a wealth of knowledge to the practice but serves as an inspiration to the all-female team.
