42 Goulburn Street

Circa Morris-Nunn Architects

2011

42 Goulburn Street is an adaptive reuse project that focuses on the conversion of the heritage listed ‘Bulls Head’ hotel (originally built 1828) and transforms this building into two inner-city apartments. Circa Morris-Nunn designed this adaptive reuse project with the brief of strengthening the character of the building while retaining the historical importance and keeping the cost of the project low as the clients were on a tight budget. This conversion was designed to be a series of small-scale, material interventions. The new interventions are designed to increase the livability and amenity of the original spaces and then this also enhances the experience of the original heritage building fabric. There has been the main importance of focusing on the details of materiality and the tectonics of the space and how this can transform the space into a function residential project on a low budget. Morris-Nunn won the Roy Smith Heritage Award and was Shortlisted for National AIA Award Australian Institute of Architects (AUS) in 2012 for this project.
