Bay of Fires Lodge

Ken Latona

1999

The Bay of Fires Lodge, designed by architect Ken Latona, is a luxury bushwalking accommodation building on the northeastern coast of Tasmania, with spectacular views of the ocean and the surrounding Mount William National Park.

It contains beautifully designed sleeping, bathing and kitchen facilities, as well as various relaxation areas, from decks to internal living rooms. In the year 2000, the Bay of Fires Lodge received Commendation for the Commercial Architecture and Interior Architecture Awards, and in 2001, was awarded the John Lee Archer Triennial Prize. One criterion for allowing the building to sit on such a pristine coastline was that it sits lightly upon the landscape; using sustainable materials and construction methods to minimise impact.

Visually, the warmth of the timber contrasts with the bright turquoise of the ocean, and the corrugated metal roof reflects the blue of the sky. To further connect with nature and the views, there are large decks, and louvre windows to extend the internal areas into the outdoors. This lodge is only accessible when undertaking the three day, guided bushwalk.
