Bungawitta Childcare is a 50-place Childcare Centre constructed in 1986, designed by Circa Morris-Nunn Chua Architect, perched in the heart of Newnham of Launceston, Tasmania. And, In the local aboriginal language, 'Bungawitta' means 'Place of Little Possums'. The namesake aims to create a relationship between the service and the traditional owners and custodians of the Land. Furthermore, in the design sense of the architecture, the interior contains key visual elements that children relate to; scaled-down buildings in the Childcare Centre provide emotional security. And, the Centre, through scaled interior to suit children - a Lilliputian environment, sets established environments full of fantasy real. Thus, the building concepts create a sense of belonging, an environment which children can intuitively understand and enjoy. Some local commentators have linked some of these concepts to ‘postmodern’ architecture. Bungawitta won the Non-Residential Award from Australian Institute of Architects (TAS) in 1987.
