Captain Kelly's Cottage

John Wardle Architects

2016

Captain kelly’s cottage, designed by John wardle architects in 2016 embraces the restoration of an original weatherboard cottage on the remote bay of Bruny Island in Tasmania.

Captain Kelly originally built the cottage in the 1830’s and as part of this project, extensive research has been carried out into the history of the cottage. This project was awarded Dezeen House Interior of the Year 2018, RIBA Award for International Excellence, Royal Institute of British Architects 2018, Roy Sharrington Smith Award for Heritage Architecture, AIA Tasmania 2017, Alexander North Award for Interior Architecture, AIA Tasmania 2017, Commendation for Heritage, AIA National Architecture Awards 2017.

The conservation of this cottage relied on the built and personal stories from the heritage architecture which guided the strategies adopted from collaborating the old and new. This was achieved with sympathetic material choices and inventive reinterpretations of original forms.
