The Coastal Pavilions are additional accommodation buildings on the Freycinet Lodge site, designed by Liminal Studio. They provide for a new type of guest; someone wanting absolute luxury in the beautiful Tasmanian landscape. The Coastal Pavilions contain separate bedroom and living pods, linked with a bathing area. The built forms curve and wrap around the central deck, creating privacy for the outdoor bath and seating. Liminal Studio’s Coastal Pavilions won the 2019 Colin Philp Award for Commercial Architecture, and in 2021 received the International Architecture Award from the Chicago and the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. The interior is incredibly striking with its sole use of warm Tasmanian timber cladding, including Tas Oak, Blackwood and locally produced plywood. The charred timber exterior not only offers strength and fire-resistant qualities in the bush setting, it also helps integrate it respectfully into the landscape. A unique feature in this design is the hammock safety net, used instead of a balustrade for the deck. This thoughtfully allows for unobstructed views, and an additional outdoor space for connecting with nature.
