The Courtyard House is a contemporary family home on a semi-rural property in Dilston, Tasmania, designed by architecture firm Circa Morris-Nunn Walker. The clients wished for a space for their growing family, along with shared living areas, and spaces for working, relaxing and playing. The site’s ideal location with panoramic views of rolling green hills and the Tamar River, meant the framing of these views became central to the design and orientation. The layout consists of a cluster of built forms with external courtyards, used to separate different rooms and delineate the children's spaces from the adults. The position of the rooms allows for maximum northern sun exposure, while the choice of concrete as a high thermal mass material, allows for the passive heating of the house.
