Design Centre Tasmania was designed by David Travalia and Richard Leplastrier. This building is an art gallery and museum, displaying art by local artists and art students, as well as work produced by the University of Tasmania’s Architecture and Design students.
Design Centre Tasmania plays host to travelling exhibitions, and small, local functions. The design for this building was informed by the existing heritage building, as well as its position in City Park, aiming to have little impact on the walkways and garden beds. An innovative construction method sets this elegant building apart from other galleries.
The beautiful curved, flowing timber ceiling is a focal point of the room, complimenting the art rather than detracting from it. The exterior was also highly considered, where the yellow interior lights make the building glow for night and evening exhibitions from the central courtyard, lighting the people and art inside.
