E + M Residence

Morris-Nunn + Associates

2006

E + M Residence, previously two church halls, was converted by Morris-Nunn and Associates into a family home and music studio. This site includes different buildings from different eras and owners, including an 1860s church hall with a major addition in the 20th century, as well as another church hall stepping up the hill. The renovation combines all these buildings and past lives into one cohesive form, as though these separate pieces have been stitched together and are now whole. E + M Residence received the 2006 Tasmanian Heritage Architecture Award, as well as the 2006 Excellence Award in Heritage Restoration from the Master Builders of Tasmania. Prominent architectural features include the contrast between old and new materiality, from the aged, rough stone walled corridor to the distinctly new black flooring and white ceiling. Accent lighting is used to thoughtfully draw attention to the original materials and historical forms within the old church halls.
