Eagles Eyrie, located at Abbotts lookout in Tasmanians southwestern wilderness, is a tourist visitor centre design by Tasmania’s architecture firm, 1+2 architecture. This tourist attraction won the 2010 Award for Public Buildings in Australian Timber Design.
The careful precision of designing this building to be nestled into the ridgeline site, reduces the environmental and visual impact, while enhancing the visitors experience inside the building through capturing the breathtaking panoramic views of southern Tasmania’s surrounding mountain ranges and forest. While constructing this building it faced many challenges to preserve the natural environment and therefore the inclusion of concrete pad footings and a suspended floor slab were chosen to reduce the site impact.
Transporting and constructing materials on site was limited through the restricted vehicle access and therefore most parts of the building are prefabricated. The external timber was treated with a silver-grey finish to help preserve the material and enhances the transition into a weathered silver-grey finish to reflect the forests of Maydena bike tracks.
