Elizabeth St Pier

Heffernan Button Voss Architects

1998

The Elizabeth Street Pier, built in the 1930s, is a significant Hobart landmark. Rather than this pier being still used for its original purpose of boat docking and passenger boarding, HBV has designed a multifunction building, containing apartments on the first floor, and restaurants at ground level.

In 1999, Elizabeth Street Pier received the Heritage - Recycling and Conservation Award, the Interior Architecture Award, and Commendation in the National Civic Design category. In 2002, this building earned more national attention, being the recipient of the Henry Hunter Triennial Prize. Respectfully, the building fits with the surrounding historic buildings on the street, and the exterior remains faithful to its seaside location with the exotic use of white and blue colouring.

Sun blades offer privacy between the apartment decks, also adding a strong vertical element consistent throughout the entire building. Inside, skylights above the stairwell in the accommodation light up the white walls with a warm yellow glow, creating an inviting, warm atmosphere.
