Forest Eco Centre

Morris-Nunn + Associates

2002

Scottsdale Forestry Eco-Centre is a sustainable and environmentally conscious office building designed by Tasmanian architecture firm Morris-Nunn and Associates. The Eco-Centre was built to provide office spaces for Forestry Tasmania workers, while also acting as a place for community gatherings and tourist attraction in this rural town. The building consists of two skins, one inside the other, with the inside building containing the offices, and the exterior housing a cafe, interpretation centre, reception area and planted internal vegetation. The Scottsdale Forestry Eco-Centre has won many Tasmanian Architecture Awards. In 2003, this building was the recipient of the Commercial Architecture Award, the Environmental Design Award, the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture, and the National Award for Sustainable Architecture. In 2004, Morris-Nunn and Associates received the John Lee Archer Triennial Prize, highlighting its national significance. While not only being a striking architectural form in this agricultural landscape, the sustainable considerations are what makes this building so notable. The outer skin acts as a barrier and moderates the temperature within the internal skin, halving the ongoing energy needs.
