GASP (Glenorchy Art & Sculpture Park) - Stage 1, is a public pavilion located on the water's edge in Glenorchy, designed by Hobart based architecture firm, Room 11. GASP features a brightly coloured walkway above the water, used by locals and visitors seeking a scenic walking trail with views and architectural interest. The walkway serves as a continuous link between parts of the foreshore, as well as a school, playground, entertainment centre and rowing club. In addition, it offers a connection between GASP - Stage 1 and Stage 2, both public pavilions designed by Room 11. Gasp - Stage 1 provides a place to sit and relax with views of the River Derwent, and cooking facilities for picnicking with family and friends. GASP was the recipient of the 2013 Tasmanian Urban Design Award, as well as the 2013 National Urban Design Award. Striking architectural qualities include the warm yellow glazing, and the consideration of the internal timber cladding that directs eye movement towards the views. A successful design strategy is the openness that makes this inviting for public use.
