The roundhouse designed by Morris-Nunn & Associates is a new steel structure that replicates the traditional ring-shaped building that was built on the site of the long-demolished steam locomotive shed at the Inveresk Railyards workshop in Launceston.
The essential heritage elements have been retained such as the railyards has the structure is utilised for the Launceston Show and demonstrates the understanding of Tasmania's heritage. The new elements of the structure include replacing the traditional massive timber post and beam structure with a curved steel vaulted forms and suspended tensioning cables. This allows the design to be lighter and more visually playful which is more appropriate for the functionality of covered market sheltering stalls and displays and a showground pavilion.
The Roundhouse won the 1999 Colorbond, Steel Architecture award and 1999 Commendation - National , Colorbound Steel Architecture award.
