IXL Apartments

Morris-Nunn + Associates

2005

The IXL Apartments, designed by Morris-Nunn and Associates, are part of the Hunter Street and IXL site redevelopment. There are 34 new apartments, ranging in size from small studios and lofts to double storey suites and penthouse rooms. The apartments are narrow, yet each has spectacular views of Sullivans Cove to the south, and the vibrant, waterfront location makes these a popular choice for tourists or Tasmanians seeking a getaway. The design of this building was heavily influenced by the site and surroundings. The prominent and recognisable glass atrium face on the northern side functions as a noise barrier from the industrial sites opposite, while acting as a trombe wall to absorb the suns energy and passively heat the apartments. Also highly considered is the sawtooth roof design, which enables this new form to fit within its industrial surroundings.
