Krakani Lumi

Taylor + Hinds Architects with the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania

2018

Krakani Lumi, translated as ‘resting place’, is a camping facility designed by Tasmanian architects Taylor & Hinds. The cabins are located in the Wukalina/Mount William National Park, as accommodation for a guided cultural walk through the park, run by the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania. Krakani Lumi has received several Tasmanian Architecture Awards, these being the 2018 Peter Wilmott Award for Small Project Architecture, the 2018 Colin Philp Award for Commercial Architecture, and the 2019 John Lee Archer Triennial Prize. The design for Krakani Lumi has been highly considered, where Taylor & Hinds worked with the Aboriginal Land Council and the Pakana/Palawa Community, to create the half dome forms representative of traditional Aboriginal huts. These half domes are a culturally important and aesthetically striking feature, with the vibrant timber interior contrasting with the black charred external cladding. The natural materiality and beautiful outdoor spaces integrate the building with the surrounding landscape. Krakani Lumi is only accessible when doing a four-day guided walk with Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania.
