Legislative Council Chambers

JAWS Interiors/JAWS Architects

2019

Legislative Council Chambers, designed by Jaws Interiors/Jaws Architects, is located in the heart of Hobart's CBD. This heritage-listed building was originally designed as a Customs House by John Lee Archer in 1830 but later became Tasmanian Parliament House.

The design intent was to provide technological support to the councillors in a way that was not intrusive and is respectful of the existing fabric. The new joinery needed to be removable, enabling the Chamber to be stripped out and rearranged for joint sittings of both houses once every four years, and then all reassembled again. While retaining the heritage essence of the building interior, in particular the early Victorian in character that interior design was adapted with careful precision. Legislative Council Chambers won the 2020 interior architecture award.
