2017

Luwa Cottage, designed by Taylor + Hinds Architects, is located at Eddystone Point Lighthouse Historic Site, on the east coast of Tasmania. This is a heritage listed cottage that accommodates ten guests and their guides.

The maritime and Aboriginal cultural heritage of this building have been restored to retain the reference both the Victorian Italianate detailing and the material culture of the palawa – Tasmania’s Aboriginal people. This building was originally built as the Head Lighthouse Keepers Quarters in 1889 and is regarded as Tasmania’s most substantial and distinctive Victorian period lighthouse precinct, which is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register, the Australian Heritage Register, and as a Commonwealth Heritage place.

Luwa Cottage has been carefully restored with the interior having the addition of a series of careful timber interventions. This building has been awarded the 2018 Roy Sharrington Smith Award for Heritage.
