Burnie Makers Workshop is a building for public use, designed by Terroir. This building houses the Burnie Makers facilities for recycling, making and drying paper, as well as a visitor centre, cafe, gallery to showcase local talent, and a museum that provides a place to reflect on the town’s industrial history. Burnie Makers Workshop won the 2010 Alan C Walker Award for Public Architecture, and in 2013 received Commendation for the Triennial Prize. This building is a striking, bold form in the landscape, designed with the industrial, coastal and economic context of the town in mind, fulfilling the needs of the locals. The precast concrete and translucent sheeting are durable materials that will ensure the longevity of the building, and their aesthetic qualities, when observed with the existing forms at the port, allude to the town's defining industrial past. The interior of the Burnie Makers Workshop is a combination of varying forms and elegant materials, with a distinctive feature being the zen view of the ocean from the staircase.
