MONA - Mueseum of Old and New Art

Fender Katsalidis

2011

MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) is a museum carved into the side of the peninsular located in Berriedale, just outside the city of Hobart. Fender Katsalidis designed this building through bold geometric exterior forms of waffle concrete and Corten steel container that is weathering gently into the landscape integrating the architecture and tourism in Tasmania.

The site is shared with a heritage-listed building of Roy Grounds house and has been repurposed to function as the museum entrance. The raw materiality is replicated on the interior with the use of slender rock-hewn corridors and sandstone walls which surrounds the descending spiral entry staircase that leads visitors to the lowest level in the museum, encouraging individuals own journey through the museum.

The architecture is an artwork in itself with the way it has been carefully arranged to showcase the artwork abroad without detaching the essence of the building. This building won many awards including 2012 People’s Choice Prize, 2013 John Lee Archer Triennial Prize and 2019 Finalist, Public Design.
