Nant Distillery

Morris-Nunn & Associates

2007

The Nant Distillery is an adaptive reuse project on the National Trust listed Nant Estate, located in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, with a colonial history dating back to 1821. Morris-Nunn and Associates transformed and gave new life to this historic site, with the restoration of the existing forms, and the construction of a new glass building in the central courtyard. The buildings now function as a whisky distillery and private tasting lounge, utilising the farmland and the 1823 Old Mill on site for gristing the barley used to make quality single malt whisky. Restoration work had to be completed on the mechanics of the machinery in the mill, getting it back into working order for its new purpose. The rest of the buildings retain their original forms and qualities, and the glass atrium ties these buildings together, using the contrast of bold new materiality, to draw focus to the old.
