Architects Alliance designed the Penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts which is located on the corner of Brisbane and Campbell Street in the centre of Tasmanians capital Hobart.
The Penitentiary Chapel was built in the early 1830's and was utilised as a chapel for the convicts’ Barracks but soon later became the Hobart Jail. In late 1859 parts of the chapel were converted into two Supreme Criminal Courts, complete with execution yard and gallows. This heritage building won two awards one in 1992 for the Recycling & Conservation, Heritage Award and the Triennial, Henry Hunter Award in 1993.
Penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts showcases the Georgian with Renaissance influences from the period of being built and is recognised as one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in the nation.
