Pumphouse Point, designed by Cumulus, focused on building 18 new guest suites within the two heritage-listed art deco buildings, which were unoccupied for 20 years.
The pumphouse was originally designed in the 1940’s as part of the hydroelectric scheme and is floating on the water with the only connection to land is 250m concrete flume. The adaptive reuse design focuses on sustainability and enhancing the heritage of the building while adding contemporary elements that minimise the sites impact. The concrete exterior structure is left touched to reveal the historic qualities of the material and its distressed state conveying the harsh environmental conditions.
The interior colour pallet and materials reflect the surrounding environment and the use of local timbers effectively been used by having rough-sawn timber in the entry and common spaces and as you enter more deeply the timber is more refined by smoother and stained panelling, creating a sense of calmness.
