Spring Bay Mill Event Spaces

Gilby & Brewin

2020

Gilby + Brewin designed the Spring Bay Mill Event Spaces located in Tribunna, Tasmania. This building was once home to one of the largest wood Chippy facility in the world. The adapted Tin Shed functions as a Performance space in an abandoned industrial facility with 230-seats and the old metal cladding forms a shimmering silver backdrop for performances.

A new bridge like entry utilises the existing entry, punching through the cladding and this retains the materiality and functional simplicity of the industrial qualities of the mill. The interior has a new timber floor that provides an insulated surface with a simple and clean building providing safe access, basic amenity and flexible functionality. Retaining the existing historic value was kept through the existing structures details and materiality with the addition of contemporary elements to highlight and function the performance space.

Spring Bay Mill Event Spaces was awarded Roy Sharrington Smith- Heritage Award, Alan C Walker- Public Architecture, Barry McNeil- Sustainable Architecture award all in 2021.
