Tahune Airwalk is a tourist attraction designed by JAWS Architects, that offers a unique Tasmanian experience. The Airwalk is a steel walkway that allows visitors to stroll among the canopy of the trees, high above the Huon River.
The varying 20 to 30 metre height above the ground allows people to appreciate the views from a different perspective, surrounded by southern Tasmania’s giant eucalyptus trees and rainforest. The most breathtaking feature is the cantilevered walkway, 50 metres above the Huon River. There is also a visitor and interpretation centre, for learning more about this attraction, or having some food at the café. In 2002, Tahune Airwalk received the Award for Commercial Architecture, and the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture.
Significant architectural qualities include the innovative steel walkway, with the cantilever creating a weightless quality and thrill for visitors. Additionally, the warm timber of the visitor centre and restaurant contrast with the lush green of the surrounding treetops seen through the large windows.
