The Bae Tas, designed by architecture firm, Workbylizandalex, is simplistic and modern accommodation converted from a rundown 1970s bedsit in Hobart. This tiny apartment is available as tourist accommodation through Air BNB.
In 2019, The Bae Tas received the Edith Emery Award for Alterations and Additions in the Residential Architecture category. Alex and Liz have certainly made the most of the limited space available in this 26 metre square room, taking a less is more approach and focusing on what is needed over what is simply wanted.
They have used material selection and layout approaches to make the space feel larger. The addition of the skylight brightens up the ceiling, making the room feel more open and expansive. The plywood interior cladding that extends from the walls up onto the ceiling creates a lack of delineation between the two, making the tiny space feel much larger. The ceiling height variation, lower over the bed for a more enclosed, intimate feeling, slopes up towards the skylight, enlarging the kitchen and living spaces.
