The Hedberg is a bold new building in the centre of Hobart, designed by architecture firm Liminal Studio. The Hedberg functions as a creative industries hub, connecting the University of Tasmania’s music campus, with the Theatre Royal, Australia’s oldest working theatre. This facility contains a world-class recital hall, as well as practise and performing rooms for the University students.
For theatre guests, there are beautifully designed reception areas and bars. An eye-catching focal point in these public interior spaces is the patterned red carpet that pays respect to the Palawa People, the traditional owners of this land.
Liminal Studio has adapted the Aboriginal custom of storytelling and performance around a central fire and represented the flames within the carpet design. However, the theatrical nature of this building is not only contained within the form; the shimmering and dramatic qualities of the external materiality, provides passersby with a hint of what lies inside, yet still leaving enough mystery to enter.
