The Three Capes Track Cabins, designed by JAWS Architects, is accommodation for walkers undertaking the Three Capes Track overnight bushwalk. It is a comfortable retreat with bedrooms, scenic living and dining rooms, and a large deck with spectacular views of the ocean and sea cliffs.
In 2016, the Three Capes Track Cabins received the Commercial Architecture Award. To develop this design that sits lightly on the site, JAWS worked with Parks and Wildlife, coming up with a prefabrication construction method, where the parts were premade and moved to site by helicopter, limiting the impact on the land. They also had many site-related conditions that informed the design, such as native bird strikes on the windows, and bushfires.
The windows are tilted to reflect the ground, making them visible to birds, and fire-resistant timber has been used. The use of timber has been continued on the interior, creating a warm and homely atmosphere, and the windows and timber-framed openings carefully highlight select views. The cabin is only accessible when doing the four-day Three Capes Track walk, a paid bushwalk around the Tasman Peninsula.
