Triabunna Gatehouse is located in a Small regional town on the east coast of Tasmania that provides an information stop which is located at the entrance to the town, inviting travellers to further explore the town and history.
This building provides the visitors guidance through the town with basic amenity (shelter, seating, town orientation and ablutions) and an insight into the history of Tasmanian history with the story of the canoe being made by a group of Aboriginal men displayed in a triangular display room. The architectural form draws inspiration from using and referencing local building, scales, materials and details to create a new urban space that attracts tourists and also provides the locals with a meaningful space to frame the unique cultural and environmental context of the town and surrounding landscape.
The building is complemented with native and endemic plant species to enhance the history and Tasmanian landscapes. Triabunna Gatehouse won the small project architecture in 2018.
