Bence Mulcahy
Founded by Sophie Bence and Shamus Mulcahy in 2014 and based in Hobart, Bence Mulcahy is a Tasmanian architecture practice known for its generous, context driven design philosophy. The firm seeks to balance global ideas with Tasmania’s distinctive landscapes and communities, embracing a “spirit of generosity” and a belief that “every project has a responsibility to its physical, social and cultural environment”.
Sophie Bence, a director, was named a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in 2025. With a background at Terroir and Liminal Spaces, she has led notable public and residential projects—such as the Mt Stuart Greenhouse—and has received multiple heritage and residential awards. She advocates for equity and community, co founded The Findlay Project, and has served on AIA councils and gender equity committees.
Shamus Mulcahy, her co director, has steered the practice across residential, educational, and commercial commissions within Tasmania. He was appointed President of the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects in 2019, reflecting his leadership within the profession.
