Licht Architecture

Licht Architecture is a fresh, emerging architecture and design firm based in Hobart, Tasmania. Founded in 2019 by architect Jason Licht, the practice expanded in 2022 when Rachel Licht, officially joined him as co-director.

Some of their notable works include Derby Floating Sauna, a pair of pavilions on the edge of a lake, designed to deliver immersive hot-cold water experiences with strong sense of place. Pop Top is another high-profile project: a one-bedroom home built above an existing garage, playing with volume, light, privacy, and colour to achieve a spacious feel in a modest footprint. Lanoma Residence in East Launceston is an alterations and additions project: updating a 1914 Federation house, opening it up to garden and daylight, adding a kitchen/dining extension, repairing connection to backyard. Also underway is Table Cape Cafe + Accommodation, consisting of a walking trail, café and tasting bar, and luxury suites on Tasmania’s North-West Coast.

Licht Architecture has already been recognised, despite its youth. Jason Licht won the 2022 Tasmanian Emerging Architect Prize. Projects like Pop Top have won awards such as the 2023 Tasmanian Architecture Awards for Residential Architecture – Houses. Derby Floating Sauna received a National Architecture Awards commendation for Small Project Architecture.

Licht’s design approach emphasises experience, delight, materiality, light, and context. They are playful but thoughtful: projects often derive richness through fine-detail resolution, and careful consideration of light, privacy and volume, even in small or constrained sites. There is a strong commitment to sustainability, honesty in materials, and making architecture that responds to place, especially Tasmania’s landscapes, climate, and urban/suburban context.
