Morrison & Breytenbach Architects is an award-winning architectural practice based in Hobart, Tasmania, founded in the 1990s by directors James Morrison and Breytenbach. Both founders bring international experience from South Africa, the UK, and the USA, combining global design perspectives with a strong connection to the Tasmanian landscape. The studio is recognized for its innovative, sustainable, and people-focused design approach, operating across a diverse range of sectors including education, residential, cultural, tourism, commercial, and heritage projects.
Notable projects include the St Cuthbert’s Catholic School Early Years Centre, which has been celebrated for its excellence in educational design, receiving both the 2023 AIA Tasmanian Chapter Award for Educational Architecture and the Learning Environments Australasia Design Award. Other significant works include the Moonah Arts Centre, Ptunarra Child and Family Centre, and the UTAS Inveresk Student Residences, showcasing the firm’s expertise in delivering functional, contextually responsive, and community-driven designs.
Morrison & Breytenbach Architects has earned widespread recognition through numerous prestigious awards at both state and national levels. Highlights include the 2025 AIA Tasmanian Awards for the Glenorchy Ambulance Station in Public Architecture and the Glenorchy Child & Family Learning Centre for Interior Design. The firm has also been recognized for projects such as the University of Tasmania Media School (2020), UTAS Inveresk Student Residences (2017), and Tarremah Hall, which received a National Commendation for Sustainable Architecture in 2011.
