Taylor + Hinds Architects
Taylor and Hinds Architects is an architecture practice co-founded by Poppy Taylor and Mat Hinds. The studio is recognised for producing site-responsive, experience-driven projects that are both functional and memorable. It was established in 2013, the practice is directed by Poppy Taylor, recipient of the 2011 Tasmanian Emerging Architect Prize, and Mat Hinds, who received the award in 2018. Their work spans from small-scale homes to nationally significant cultural sites.
Notable projects include krakani lumi, a standing camp for the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania; the Denison Rivulet Cabins inspired by shack traditions; the Lower Jordan Hill Road Extension in Hobart; and the nationally awarded Cottage School. More recently, they completed James Street House in Launceston.
The practice has received multiple Australian Institute of Architects awards at both state and national levels, and was internationally recognised by Domus in 2020 as one of the world’s Top 50 practices. Poppy Taylor was the 2011 Emerging Architect Prize and Matthew Hinds in 2018.
Taylor and Hinds emphasise architecture rooted in place, culture, and material clarity. Their approach combines technical precision with a sensitivity to environment, producing designs that are enduring, thoughtful, and contextually meaningful.
